Golden Jade (Crassula ovata) exhibits slow growth whether cultivated indoors as a potted plant or outdoors (zone 9+) as a dense, mounding shrub.

 

Its glossy, ovate (egg-shaped) leaves emerge from thick, woody stems and adopt a golden yellow hue with red margins when exposed to full sunlight.

 

This species demonstrates excellent resistance to pests, diseases, deer, and neglect. It is sufficient to provide well-draining soil, protection against severe frost, and deep watering when the soil becomes completely dry.

 

Over time, mature outdoor specimens generally require no irrigation. Jade propagates easily through cuttings and produces dense clusters of white, star-shaped flowers during the winter.

 

Crassula may display tiny white or black dots on its leaves; these are healthy water-transferring pores known as "hydathodes," and do not indicate disease.
