Hello Cla(y)rice: Let's play with Clay. You see what I did there? Now, let's talk about Skin Care
What are Clays? What is their importance in skin care?
Play of words aside, clay provides numerous skin care benefits, mainly by absorbing excess oil, removing impurities, and calming irritated skin. Different types of clay suit various skin types, making it a versatile ingredient in skincare. Additionally, clay is used as a natural colorant in cosmetics and skin care products.

Clay can also boost circulation, helping to promote a healthy glow. Different types of clay provide various levels of exfoliation and oil absorption, enabling customization to suit individual needs.
Listed below are the benefits of many clays that we use regularly in our handcrafted products at The Hayagriva Spa. We use these clays as natural colorants in our products.
Kaolin Clay
White and red kaolin clay provide different skin benefits: white kaolin is gentle and suitable for dry and sensitive skin. In contrast, red kaolin is more absorbent and ideal for oily or acne-prone skin. Both types offer gentle cleansing, and pink kaolin clay provides the best of both worlds for those with combination skin.
French Clay
This green clay hails from France, of course, with its high concentrations of plant material and volcanic matter. Because this clay is still reasonably mild, it is excellent for dry and mature types. This clay is also a great anti-inflammatory, so those with irritations from chemical peels, problem skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, and just overall dry and itchy skin, will find this clay to be soothing without overdrying. Additionally, French green clay is known for its detoxifying properties, helping to draw out impurities and excess oils from the skin. It also promotes circulation, which can give the skin a healthy glow, and supports skin renewal, aiding in the healing process of minor wounds and scars.
Fueller's Earth
Fuller's earth is a natural clay that offers various benefits for the skin. It is widely recognized for its ability to absorb excess oil and cleanse, which makes it a common component in skincare products and homemade face masks. It can assist in reducing acne, blemishes, and uneven skin tone by drawing out impurities and oils. Additionally, it helps soothe sunburn, decreases inflammation, and can even be effective against dandruff when applied to the scalp.
Bentonite Clay
Bentonite clay, also known as Montmorillonite, is the most absorbent of all the clays. It has a strong ability to draw oils, bacteria, and impurities from the skin, making it a superb choice for acneic and overly active skin types. Cystic acne, bacteria-filled acne, and skin with large oily pores will find its tightening effects and oil-drawing capabilities desirable. In addition to its skin benefits, bentonite clay can also be beneficial for hair care. It helps to deep cleanse the scalp by removing excess oil, buildup, and toxins, which can promote healthier hair growth. Its absorbent properties can help reduce dandruff and scalp itchiness. Moreover, bentonite clay can help restore pH balance, making it a versatile natural remedy for both skin and hair health.
