Liquid Gold: Plant-Based Hydrosols & Gels

Why use them for skin care?

Hydrosols, also called floral waters or herbal distillates, are aromatic waters/byproducts produced during steam distillation of plant material to extract essential oils. They contain water-soluble aromatic compounds and a small amount of essential oil, resulting in a gentler, more diluted aroma with therapeutic properties compared to pure essential oils.

When refrigerated, hydrosols and gels can serve as face toners, followed by oil serums for moisturizers if needed, making them a valuable addition to skincare routines. It can also be used as a setting spray. Moreover, hydrosols can also be sprayed onto plain sheet masks, refrigerated, and used regularly.

Hydrosols are also used in numerous cosmetic and self-care formulations as an enriched substitute for plain distilled water, for their numerous benefits. Hydrosols are most effective when refrigerated. Combining hydrosols with hyaluronic acid and/or milk creates a potent mixture for enhanced outcomes.

Listed below are the benefits of many such ingredients that we use regularly in our handcrafted products at The Hayagriva Spa.

Kewra

Kewra water is an aromatic liquid derived from the Pandanus Flower. It functions as a natural toner, helping to balance the skin's pH, tighten pores, and improve clarity. It also hydrates and revitalizes the skin, leaving it feeling fresh. Rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, kewra is an organic skincare option. It contains valuable plant chemicals such as phenols, tannins, glycosides, isoflavones, and carotenoids, which work together to create a soft, smooth skin texture and a radiant complexion. Moreover, it helps treat skin issues like acne, psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea. Kewra water soothes skin, wounds, redness, puffiness, and swelling, promoting a healthy glow from within. It is especially beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin.

Orange Blossom

Orange blossom hydrosol functions as a natural toner, cleansing pores and removing impurities. It's slightly acidic pH helps balance the skin's natural pH, benefiting all skin types—especially combination skin. It hydrates skin and controls oiliness, making it a versatile option for various skin needs. Rich in antioxidants like flavonoids, it helps fight pollutants and protect against skin damage, resulting in a brighter, more glowing complexion and less dullness. It also encourages skin cell regeneration for a smoother, healthier look. Additionally, orange blossom hydrosol can be applied to hair and nails—soothing scalp irritations and reducing nail discoloration. Packed with Vitamin C, B, E, and other antioxidants, it is also praised in skincare for its potential to promote collagen production, which is influenced by Vitamin C, and to help hydrate and moisturize the skin.

Rose

Rose hydrosol, also known as rose water or floral water, offers a range of benefits, particularly for skin and hair. It is valued for its hydrating, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making it a popular ingredient in skincare routines. It soothes irritated skin, reduces redness, and helps achieve a more youthful appearance. For hair, it manages oil production, dandruff, and scalp irritation while adding shine and reducing frizz. The natural oils provide light moisture and a cooling sensation. Rose hydrosol also helps clear pores, minimize their appearance, and improve skin texture, resulting in a smoother, more toned complexion. Rose hydrosol may strengthen skin cells against sun damage and soothe sun-exposed areas. As a gentle moisturizer, it alleviates dry, flaky skin. For optimal results, combining rose hydrosol with hyaluronic acid and milk is recommended for those with dry skin.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera dissolves excess oil and tightens pores with its astringent properties. It has antibacterial benefits that help clear acne-causing bacteria and serves as a natural moisturizer, especially for dry or sensitive skin. Aloe vera soothes sunburns, rashes, and irritations, and its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties can reduce acne and aid wound healing. It also slows signs of aging by stimulating collagen and containing antioxidants. Its mucopolysaccharides attract moisture, making it a good moisturizer. It promotes collagen and fibroblast production, protecting the skin barrier and fighting environmental damage. Recommended for those with sensitive skin and to soothe chemically treated skin.
